The Showpower SmartGrid

A world-first system, delivering grid scale features and capacity, in a transportable, compact modular footprint.

Built for:

  • Global artist touring
  • Large-scale festivals
  • Cultural celebrations
  • Sporting events
  • Outside broadcast compounds

The Showpower Smart Grid is the prime power source.  All power is supplied directly by the SmartGrid components (Showpower Units & Energy Storage Units)

System recharging takes place via;

  • a grid connection of up to 630A total, or
  • one or more synchronised generator connections (up to 630A each)

The system can also peak shave a grid supply – passing through the grid power to the show load and boosting it from the batteries when required

Through the HMI, the operator is able to adjust the AC input levels to best suit the chosen charging solution. This is particularly important when connected to generator supplies, as it allows the operator to run the generators at peak efficiency. (Noting that the ratio of kWh generated per litre of fuel consumed is at optimal level when a generator is running at between 60 – 85% of its total generation capacity.)

Key Features

1.  The Showpower Unit:

  • The workhorse of the system
  • 250kW 3 phase output per unit
  • provides all AC power to the end user
  • 630A powerlock and 125A panel mount connections
  • Controls all system functions via a state of the art Human/Machine Interface (HMI), locally or remotely
  • Up to 5 Showpower Units can be connected together (1.25MW power)

2.  The Energy Storage Unit (ESS):

  • Up to 250kWh energy storage per unit
  • 2nd life Lithium Ion batteries
  • Up to 4 units can be connected to each Showpower unit (1MWh storage)
  • Proprietary Battery Management System (BMS)

Features common to both components:

  • Liquid cooled using a non-hazardous refrigerant
  • IP55 Ruggedised design with lifting rings and 4-way fork pockets
  • Compact transport footprint 2.3×1.14×1.6m, to fit trucking, shipping and airfreight
  • Flexible layout
  • Stackable

World-first modular, scalable power output

  • Each 250kW Showpower unit operates independently and communicates with others in the Showpower SmartGrid
  • Fully synchronise 2-5 Showpower units for N-1 redundancy (e.g. for 250kW Peak Load, use 2x Showpower units – if one fails, the other will seamlessly continue to support the load, for as long as there is energy in the batteries)
  • Continuous power output from <1kW up to 1,250kW
  • 630A pass-through and smart boost capacity per Showpower unit – Output up to 450kW per unit and Peak Shave small grid supplies, making them usable for large shows

Flexible, scalable storage

Add from one to four 250kWh ESS units to each Showpower Unit. Achieve ultimate flexibility, with available energy from 250kWh up to a massive 5,000kWh.

Some example configurations of the Showpower SmartGrid are shown below:

  • 1x SPU + 1x ESS = 250kW output and 250kWh of stored energy / 1x SPU + 4x ESS = 250kW output and 1xMWh of stored energy
  • 2x SPU + 4x ESS = 500kW output and 1MWh of stored energy / 2x SPU + 8x ESS = 500kW output 2MWh of stored energy
  • 4x SPU + 8x ESS = 1MW output and 2MWh of stored energy / 4x SPU + 16x ESS = 1MW output and 4MWh of stored energy

A Global Power Solution

The Showpower Smart Grid system is designed to operate in multiple territories and so features a 50 – 60Hz switching function on both the AC inputs and outputs. The System can also operate in a 3-phase AC Voltage range of 380-500V. The HMI is remotely accessible by our technical team, ensuring that real-time support can be provided 24/7, no matter where the system is deployed.

Standards and Certifications

The Showpower Smart Grid is built to the highest standards and incorporates components from only the most reputable suppliers, including Danfos, ABB and Toshiba. As such, it conforms to all the relevant standards and certifications, including but not limited to:

  • Low Voltage directive 2014/35/EU
